Using <scp>eDNA</scp> to estimate biomass of bycatch in pelagic fisheries

چکیده

In recent years, the analysis of environmental DNA (eDNA) has significantly improved, allowing for high-resolution species identification and possible biomass quantification from water samples. Fisheries management typically requires monitoring catches, including precise information about bycatch quantities to make sound assessments exploitation rates. Bycatch assessment is particularly challenging in large catches (>500 T), current practice visual subsampled time-consuming, extensive labor, often low precision. We explored feasibility applying eDNA-based methods studying catch composition using pelagic North Sea herring fishery with mackerel as a case. First, we experimentally simulate series range weight proportions establish relationships under real fisheries scenarios. The relationship subsequently used estimate eDNA three by sampling comparing processing both onboard ships at factory. All samples are analyzed species-specific quantitative PCR (qPCR). experiments reveled strong correlation between fractions characterized constant overrepresentation compared expected weight. found that applied same landing reflect within variability alike, however, can show disparity total estimates biomass. Accounting haul mixing landed increases precision factory ship catch. provide coherent data, likely improve quality reduce costs collecting fisheries-dependent data thereby contribute securing sustainable fisheries.

Seabird Bycatch in Pelagic Longline Fisheries Is Grossly Underestimated when Using Only Haul Data

Hundreds of thousands of seabirds are killed each year as bycatch in longline fisheries. Seabirds are predominantly caught during line setting but bycatch is generally recorded during line hauling, many hours after birds are caught. Bird loss during this interval may lead to inaccurate bycatch information. In this 15 year study, seabird bycatch was recorded during both line setting and line hau...

Modeling spatial patterns in fisheries bycatch: improving bycatch maps to aid fisheries management.

Fisheries bycatch, or incidental take, of large vertebrates such as sea turtles, seabirds, and marine mammals, is a pressing conservation and fisheries management issue. Identifying spatial patterns of bycatch is an important element in managing and mitigating bycatch occurrences. Because bycatch of these taxa involves rare events and fishing effort is highly variable in space and time, maps of...

Dynamic habitat models: using telemetry data to project fisheries bycatch.

Fisheries bycatch is a recognized threat to marine megafauna. Addressing bycatch of pelagic species however is challenging owing to the dynamic nature of marine environments and vagility of these organisms. In order to assess the potential for species to overlap with fisheries, we propose applying dynamic habitat models to determine relative probabilities of species occurrence for specific ocea...

Dolphinfish Bycatch in Spanish Mediterranean Large Pelagic Longline Fisheries, 2000–2010

The aim of this paper is to describe the dolphinfish bycatch rates in the longline fisheries of the Western Mediterranean and modelling the nominal bycatch abundance and distribution of dolphinfish from the Spanish Mediterranean as a function of technical, geographical, and seasonality factors. Our results indicate that the impact of the pelagic and semipelagic longline on the dolphinfish popul...
